The Canal du Midi : a french canal connecting Toulouse to the Mediterranean Sea since the 17th century. Named ‘canal royal en Languedoc‘ (Royal Canal in Languedoc) at first, it was renamed ‘canal du Midi’ in 1789 by the French revolutionaries. It was at the time considered one of the greatest construction works of the 17th century. Starting in the 19th century, the canal de Garonne, which doubles the Garonne river from Bordeaux to Toulouse, extends the canal du Midi to give a sailable waterway from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea : the two canals together make the ‘canal des Deux Mers‘ (Canal of the Two Seas). It was inscribed as a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1996.
Lac de la Cavayère : Nearby the Medieval City, in a natural environment, the lac de la Cavayère & the Raymond Chésa leisure complex extend over 40 hectares and are home to an opulent Mediterranean vegetation. A perfect spot to take a stroll and relax, you will find equipped areas for a picnic, an acrobatic forest park, paddle boats, a mini-golf course, inflatable water-games, several beach-volley courts and a cable skiing facility.
Carcassonne : From its very beginning, and because of its location, the city was built as a stronghold in case of conflicts. Despite its impressive fortifications, the city fell in the hands of numerous invaders (the Romans, then the Francs and even the Saracens). The story of Carcassonne is directly linked to the one of the city. In 1247, the city starts to expand outside of its original boundaries, this part will become the lower city, also called Bastide Saint-Louis. South of the city, 5 fortified castles (château de Termes, château d’Aguilar, château de Quéribus, château de Peyrepertuse & château de Puilaurens) of which ruins still remain, were considered as ‘the 5 sons of Carcassonne’, and used to be the defense against Spanish invaders crossing the Languedoc region.
